Urim Ve'Tumim - the Copy of Rabbi Avraham of Ciechanów with his Stamp - Signature of his Grandson, Rabbi Aharon Zvi Landau, the Rebbe of Biala
Urim Ve'Tumim. Commentary on the Shulchan Aruch Chosehn Mishpat. By Rabbi Yonatan Eibschitz. First part. Ostroh, 1834.
On the title page a stamp of "Avraham ben Raphael" - the Rebbe, Rabbi Avraham Landau of Ciechanów.
Rabbi Avraham of Ciechanów (1784-1875) was a great Torah and kabbala scholar, a well-known holy man. He was greatly admired by the rabbis and Rebbes of his generation. Rabbi Simcha Bonem of Przysucha, who met him at Strykow, said: "a guest more important than me has come to town". Rabbi Mendel of Kock said that Rabbi Avraham "has the image of a Divine angel". Rabbi Chaim Halberstam of Sanz said that anyone who lived in Poland and did not know the Rebbe of Ciechanów, would be punished.
His novellae and sayings were published in the following books: "Zchuta De'Avraham", "Ahavat Chassed", "Beit Avraham" and more.
His four sons served as rabbis and Rebbes: Rabbi ze'ev Wolf Landau - the Rebbe of Strykow; Rabbi Dov Berisch of Biala ; Rabbi Raphael - a Rebbe in Warsaw and Rabbi Ya'akov - the Rebbe of Yazov, who replaced his father as the rabbi of Ciechanów in his old age.
Among his followers were the Rebbe of Sochaczew, Rabbi Avraham Bernstein, the author of "Avnei Nezer" and Rabbi Yechiel Meir of Gostynin.
At the beginning of the book, a handwritten inscription: "This Urim Ve'Tumim belongs to … Rabbi Aharon Landau of Biala" referring to Rabbi Aharon Zvi Landau of Biala, the son of Rabbi Dov Berish of Biala (the Rebbe of Warka) and the grandson of Rabbi Avraham of Ciechanów.
After the death of the Rebbe of Alexander Rabbi Yerachmiel Yisrael Yitzchak Danziger, a part of the Alexander Hassidim accepted the leadership of Rabbi Aharon Zvi Landau, who lived in Strykow (thus establishing the Strykow Hassidic dynasty). Many miraculous stories were told of him. He died in 1910 and about 50,000 people attended his funeral. He was replaced by hus brother, Rabbi Elimelech Menachem Mendel Landau of Strykow.
Stamps of Rabbi Yechiel Landau, the grandson of Rabbi Aharon Zvi.
Throughout the book, about ten glosses written in pencil (correction of errors). On pp. 194, a short gloss (one word) in ink.
On pp. 45 in nice handwriting: "omitted from the printing Siman 26 and you will find it at the end of the book". Siman 26 "She'lo Ladun Be'Dinei Akum" was omitted under the instructions of the censor. At the end of the book, two pages were glued (4 written pages) which contain, in nice, orderly handwriting, the Siman that was omitted. On the last page there is a completion of Siman 94.
The title page is in red ink.
Approbations by the greatest rabbis: Rabbi Avraham Yehoshua Heschil (from 1825) and Rabbi Chaim Ya'akov of Dubno (from 1924). To these, an approbation for the volume before us by Rabbi Efrayim of Sudilkov was added, referring to the printer Reb Chanich Heinich and to the printing permit he had already in 1825 when he had wanted to print the book, yet for various reasons had avoided doing it. Now Rabbi Efrayim notes that the prohibition by the above rabbis not to print the book is still valid and only the printer Chanoch Heinich is permitted to print the book in the next ten years.
