Torah Thoughts by Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv

Torah Novellae and words or mussar and inspiration which Rabbi Elyashiv wrote in Elul.

Words of Torah on the topic of the brevity of the days of man. Time is brief and the work is abundant, and the workers are lazy, that only in the service of G-d is it possible to find 'lazy workers,' a calculation of time which the Chafetz Chaim would make towards the end of his days regarding the days that had passed, one who speaks between laying hand tefillin and head tefillin returns from the battlefield, novellae on the topic of 'correct yourself in the corridor so that you will enter the parlor,' a person has to know the role of 'worker' is in his world, the fast of Yom Kippur is not an end in itself but in order to bring a person to leave his place, as in worldly matters when a person is subject to trial he loses his appetite, words of inspiration regarding utilization of time, the difference between Divine Presence for an individual vs. for the community, for the individual all is dependent on the person's deeds, and for the community, "I am the L-rd your G-d who walks near your camps" - due to the power of community, the goal of 'walking' in this world is "I will walk before G-d in the land of the living" which is the infinite walking from the place of a person to his eternal goal, in any case a man is within the realm of "walker," Rabbi Elyashiv compares a person's walking to the Egged Central Station where everyone arrives in order "to walk" but one walks to a hike and one walks to 'judgement,' and other issues.

Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv [1910-2012], was born in the city Shavel which is in Lithuania as an only son after 17 years of marriage. In 1924 he immigrated to Israel with his family who settled in the Meah Shearim neighborhood in Jerusalem. He later became the greatest adjudicator of the generation, and leader of the generation.
