Torah Thoughts by Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv

Torah thoughts in the handwriting of Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv. Words of aggadah and mussar about the exalted level of the Torah.

Novaelle on the topic of 'Torat Hashem Temima' - that the Torah completes all the blemished parts of a person's soul, 'you are entirely beautiful my beloved and you have no blemish' was said about the generation who received the Torah who reached completion of the their soul when they stood at Mount Sinai and therefore it was given to them in its entirety, words of encouragement about keeping Shabbat, which is what keeps the Jewish people existing as a nation, a novaelle on the words of the Sages 'If the Jewish people were to keep two Shabbatot, they would be redeemed immediately' which means that keeping Shabbat himself and ensuring that his friend also keeps Shabbat is called 'two shabbatot', novaelle on the topic of 'If the Torah had not been given to the Jewish people we would learn modesty from the cat, theft from the ant etc.' that man was naturally given all the good quality traits, the reason for the fences and borders which our Sages is primarily for the final generation, when sinners will come and claim that the times have changed and that the Torah must be adapted to the spirit of the times, the reason 'Vayechulu' is recited quietly and then out loud by the whole congregation, and other matters.

Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv [1910-2012] was born in the city of Shavel, Lithuania, his parents' only son after 17 years of marriage.
