Hagadah shel Pesach. With commentary by R. Joseph of Padua.
Each page within elaborate woodcut illustrated and textual borders. Preliminary page with Order of the Seder service in three languages: Judeo-Italian, Yiddish and Ladino, (reflective of the languages spoken in the Venetian Ghetto at the time). Vivid illustrations throughout. ff. (34). Several leaves expertly laid to size (small marginal portions provided in facsimile viz. ff. 1, 4, 10), trimmed, few light stains. Modern calf. Housed in custom slip-case. Sm. 4to. Yudlov 370; Yaari 29.

Daniel Zanetti, Venice: 1601.

The four Hagadahs printed in Venice between 1599-1604 are are of considerable historic importance as transitional experiments between the Mantua Hagadahs of 1560 and 1568 and the definitive Venetian editions of 1609 and 1629.
The present dramatic Hagadah is the first to bear a title-page embellished with woodcut illustrations. The type is also larger and bolder than the 1599 edition. see previous lot. Of note is the varied applications of the illustrations that were used differently in each of these two Venetian editions. See Yerushalmi, Haggadah and History, plates 34-40.
