An Important, Interesting Letter Handwritten by Rabbi Moshe Kliers, Av Beit Din of Tiberius, to Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak Ha'Cohen Kook – 1925
A letter handwritten and signed by Rabbi Moshe Kliers the rabbi of Tiberius, to his friend the Chief Rabbi, Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak Ha'Cohen Kook. Tevet 1925. Written on the impressive stationery of the 'Or Torah' Yeshiva of Tiberius (a picture of the yeshiva appears on the upper part of the leaf). A fascinating letter which echoes well-known events of the period.
At the beginning of the letter, Rabbi Kliers congratulates rabbi Koon on his return to the Land of Israel after a fund-raising trip to the USA for the yeshivas of the Land of Israel. The trip had taken a year and the complete country had rejoiced with Rabbi Kook's return. Rabbi Kliers greets Rabbi Kook, saying: "May God bless his Holy City with peace", hinting at the bitter controversy of those days between the zealots of Jerusalem and the rabbis of the Chief Rabbinate.
The second part of the letter refers to a certain idea related to the Hassidic parties of Tiberius. Rabbi Kliers recalls that he had organized a large meeting of the elders and notable people of the community so that they will express their opinion on the unknown matter, most likely, some public initiative suggested by Rabbi Kook.
The major part of the letter refers to the activity of the Shochet of the Moshava Kinneret close to Tiberius. Rabbi Kliers reminds Rabbi Kook of his last journey to the settlements, when he promised to take care of the payment of the Shochatim. In this context, Rabbi Kliers praises [Moshe] Abramsohn, a well-known pioneer of the second Aliya, who worked as a farmer in the Moshava Kinneret. Abramsohn prevented the Shochet from leaving the Moshava by financially supporting him. However, rabbi Kliers asks Rabbi Kook to become involved in the matter so that other Shochatim in nearby settlements will not leave.
On the margins of the letter, his signature and stamp.
Condition: Good.
