"The Yishuv is being Ruined by the Locust" – a Rare Proclamation Calling to Join the War against the Locust that Swarmed the Land of Israel – 1915
"The voice of our brothers' blood is cries to us from the earth of the settlements" – a proclamation with a touching plea for saving the settlements of the Land of Israel from the bitter enemy – the locust.
An extremely rare proclamation, does not appear in libraries is Israel and is bibliographically unknown!
In March 1915, in the midst of World War I, swarms of locust covered the Land of Israel, which destroyed all the crops. It was a heavy blow to the Jewish settlement and its bitter taste remained for years to come.
The locust threatened the residents of the towns as well; but those who suffered the greatest were the residents of the settlements, whose crops served not only as their food but also as livelihood.
At first, the Jewish settlements recruited the agronomist Aharon Aharonsohn to help them fight the locust, who was supported by Djemal Pasha, the Ottoman military leader. However, when the official commands of the Ottoman government regarding the obligation of every Jew to join the war against the locust expired, the farmers were forced to fight it themselves. That was when proclamations such as the one before us appeared on the walls.
The proclamation expresses the great fear felt by the Yishuv: "The Yishuv is being destroyed by the Locust. Every day, every moment, a vineyard, an orchard is destroyed… let no one think that without him the job will be done. Brothers! … Come and work to save us!"
The proclamation also presents practical information about the war against the locust: "We gather beside the office of the city council in Tel Aviv". It is also written that the "Locust Committee" arranges lodgings and food for the fighters but that "everyone has to bring his own pillow and blanket".
