Historical Document: the Official Kushan of On eof the First Neighborhoods of Jerusalem, Signed by the Purchaser of the Land and the Founder of the Neighborhood, Rabbi Yosef Rivlin – [1882] – an Item Fit for a Museum!
An Ottoman Kushan, written in Turkish, referring to the legal state of a plot of land outside the Old City of Jerusalem, near the Jaffa Gate. The size of the plot is mentioned, its borders, the type of land and the history of its owners. The name of "Khawaja (Mr.) Yosef ben Avraham Rivlin" is mentioned as a lessee of the land is mentioned.
The document is date: 29 Tzafar the year of 1298, that is 1882. In that year, Rabbi Yosef Rivlin purchased the lands on which he built the Mazkeret Moshe and Ohel Moshe neighborhoods of Jerusalem.
The deal was made by Rabbi Yosef Rivlin, the leader of the Ashkenazic community of Jerusalem and founder of 'Ha'Va'ad Ha'Klali' – the supreme public institution of Jerusalem who founded fourteen new neighborhoods in Jerusalem.
His handwritten signature appears on the document: "Yosef Rivlin, Even Yisrael". And his stamp. There are also several Turkish lines written by the seller with his stamp.
An extremely rare document of national and historical significance, which reflects an important aspect of the devoted public activity of Rabbi Yosef Rivlin on behalf of the Jews of Jerusalem.
To the best of our knowledge, there are no other documents like the one before us!
The neighborhoods of Ohel Moshe and Mazkeret Moshe were founded by Rabbi Yosef Rivlin and additional people in 1882 and their building was completed in 1885, thanks to the monetary assistance of the 'Moses Montefiore Fund' which was founded in 1874 in honor of Moses Montefiore. The Mazkeret Moshe neighborhood was built for the Ashkenazic community and the Ohel Moshe neighborhood, for the Sephardic community.
