Large Collection [22] of Rare Books from the Late 16th Century-Early 17th Century – Some of Them First Editions – Dozens of Glosses and Signatures
A large, rare collection of books that were printed during the late 16th century and early 17th century. Most of them were printed in Venice and a few in other places. The books before us are lacking copies; however. Most of them lack only single leaves, often only the title page. These books are rare in and of themselves. In addition, several of them contain scholarly glosses in ancient script which were written close to the time of printing!
Following is a detailed list of the books:
Midrash Shmuel by Rabbi Shmuel de Uçeda. "Printed for the third time". Printed by Daniel Zanetti. 251 [1] leaves. The title page is missing and has been completed by a photocopy. Condition: Good. On the Forsazt leaf, many ancient signatures from the late 17th century, maybe earlier. Among others: "belongs to rabbi Zvi Hirsch"; "the Midrash Shmuel belongs to … Rabbi Meshulam the son of the Naggid … Yekutiel Zalman of K. Reivitz [?]".
A volume of Shisha Sidrei Mishna. With Kaf Nachat. Venice 1614. Two sections in one volume. Section A: Zera'im, Mo'ed, Nashim. 171 [should be 170] leaves. Section B: Nezikin, Kodashim, Taharot. 78, 81-246 leaves. Leaves 243 and onwards are missing. Scholarly glosses and signatures by different writers.
In addition, three additional volumes of a similar, yet lightly different edition [maybe Venice 1628]: 1. A volume with leaves 4-233. 2. A volume with leaves 16-171. At the beginning of the volume, several leaves were completed in nice Yemen script. At the end of the volume, ancient inscriptions. 3. A volumes with leaves 9-158.
Respons by the Geonim [Teshuvot Ha'Geonim]. Mantova 1597. 36 leaves. The tile page and first three leaves are missing. A scholarly gloss signed: "Yosef Gig". (Most likely, author of the 'Pi Ha'Midbar' commentary on the Passover Haggadah).
Shulchan Aruch Yoreh Deah. Venice 1578. Leaves 2-276.
Shulchan Aruch with Hagahot Ha'Rama. [Venice?]. The early 17th century. 201 pp. The title page and the first 27 leaves are missing. Ancient inscriptions.
Shulchan Aruch [with Hagahot Ha'Rama]. Even Ha'Ezer, Hanau 1627. To this edition, the sources of Hagahot Ha'Rama, which were printed for the first time in the Krakow edition of 1607, were added. 67 leaves. The title page is missing. Condition: Good. An ancient scholarly gloss.
Tur, Orach Chaim [Venice], the early 17th century. Leaves 26-230.
Machzor le'Yamim Noraim. [Venice], the early 17th century [?]. leaves 9-125. A scholarly gloss on the last leaf.
Seder Kri'at Ha'Tora Le'Hoshana Rabba Ve'Shavu'ot. [The early 17th century]. 37 leaves. The title page and the first four leaves are missing.
Rosh Mar Dror. Venice, 1615. First edition. 116 [4] leaves. (mispagination). The title page and the first three leaves are missing. Condition: Good.
Reshit Chochma. Venice, 1579. First edition. 421 [28] leaves. 4 leaves of the indices at the edn of the book are missing. A copy that is made of two copies. Several scholarly glosses.
An additional copy of the above Reshit Chochma. The copy begins with leaf 188 and ends with leaf 421 (the indices leaves are missing). Many short glosses.
"Ha'Levush" five volumes" 1. Levush Ir Shushan. Prague 1624. 2. Choshen Mishpat. 191 leaves. The title page is missing. Wear. 3. Levush Ir Shushan. Prague 1610. 209 leaves. The title page is missing. Begins with leaf 7. 4. Levush Ha'Butz Ve'Argaman. Prague 1609. 5. Even Ha'Ezer. 108 leaves (8 leaves at the end are missing).
Arba'ah Turim. Two volumes. Volume A: Yoreh Deah. Krakow, the early 17th century. Leaves 34-351. Volume B: Venice, the early 17th century. Leaves 92-198.
Lechem Mishneh, by Rabbi Avraham Boton. On Maimonides' Mishneh Torah. Venice 1606. First edition. Second section. 233 leaves (originally: 239 leaves). From leaf 200, the leaves are glued to each other and with difficulty can be separated. Except for this, in good condition.
Halichot Olam. Venice, the early 17th century. The copy begins with lead 12. Indices leaves are printed at the end of the book. Moth damage, mainly on the margins of the leaves.
Varying sizes. Some of the books are large while others are pocket size. New identical bindings.
Condition: Fair-Good. Time stains. Some of the volumes have moth holes; however, these are mostly on the margins of the leaves with no damage to text.
Note: it is possible that several additional leaves are missing besides those that have been mentioned.
