Eleven Leaves of the Talmud which were Printed in Salonika and Constantinople in the 16th Century – Rare Editions!
A rare collection of leaves of various tractates of the Talmud which were printed in Salonika in the 16th century. All the editions of the Talmud that were printed in Salonika are extremely rare since they were printed in limited editions. It is difficult to determine to which edition the leaves before us belong to since these tractates are extremely rare and almost completely unattainable. See the article of A. Horowitz "Mahadurot Masechet Baba Kama Mi'Dfusei Saloniki" (The Editions of the Baba Kama Tractates of the Salonika Printing Presses), New York 1986, which presents the textual variations between the different editions of the Talmud that were printed in Salonika.
Thus, the leaves before us are highly significant not only because of their rareness but because of their textual variations!
Following is a list of the leaves:
A leaf of the Beitza Tractate. Salonika, Yosef ya'avetz Printing Press, 1565.
The text of the leaf is identical to leaf 23 of the known editions of the Beitza tractate. Before us is a leaf of an early edition of the tractate, a single copy of which belongs to the library of the Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati, USA. See Y. Mehlmann, Gnuzot Sefarim, pp. 53, no. 9.
The leaf before us was completed with a photocopy from the above copy of the Hebrew Union College.
Vinograd, Salonika 67.
An ancient signature on the lower part of the leaf: "Moshe ben Kevod Ha'rav Yehuda"/
A leaf of the Pesachim Tractate. Constantinople, 1585.
Leaf 122, with Piskei Tosfot on the Pesachim tractate.
The corner is torn with omission. The text has been nicely completed by a photocopy of an original leaf.
Ya'ari Kushta 209; Vinograd Saloniki 291.
Three leaves of the Ketubot Tractate. [Salonika, the 16th century]
The text that was printed on the first leaf is identical to leaf 4 of our editions and the two additional, consecutive leaves are identical to leaves 66b-68a of our editions. Omissions in the text. Restored leaves.
Two consecutive leaves of the Berachot Tractate. [Salonika, the 16th century]
The text that was printed on these leaves is identical to leaves 56b-58a of our editions. Omissions in the text. Restored leaves
Four leaves of the Beitza Tractate. [Salonika, the 16th century]
The text that was printed on these leaves is identical to leaves 24-26 of our editions
Condition: Fair. The leaves are restored and the omissions have been completed with paper. Some of the leaves have been glued onto high-quality paper to make them properly firm.
