Manuscript – Novellae by the Author of 'Machatzit Ha'Shekel' on the Gittin Tractate – Written in His Lifetime – Has Never been Printed – the Early 18th Century
Manuscript. Novellae on the Gittin Tractate leaf 84 on the Sugiya of "Harei zh Gitech…". On the upper part of the leaf, an inscription: "In th enam eof Moharash Kelin", that is, Rabbi Shmuel Kelin author of 'Machatzit Ha'Shekel'. To the best of our knowledge, the novellae has never been printed, and in this the manuscript before us differs from other manuscripts of copying of novellae by the author of 'Machatzit Ha'Shekel'. Another difference lies in the fact that the manuscript before us was written during the author's lifetime! The other manuscripts, which have been printed, were written after the author's death.
Four pages (a folded leaf written on all its sides). A total of 200 lines (!) handwritten in nice, dense script.
The novellae is written in the first person: "It seems in my humble opinion" and the like.
Rabbi Shmuel Kelin (1724-1806) was a most prominent rabbi who served a s a head of a yeshiva in Boskowitz and had thousands of disciples, some of which became well-known rabbis. Was known for his composition 'Machatzit Ha'Shekel' on the 'Magen Avraham' commentary on the Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim.
For years, Rabbi Shmuel refused to accept rabbinical positions in major Jewish communities such as Prague (according to rabbi Yechezkel Landau), Uben (according to the Maharam Mintz) and Pressburg (after the death of the Maharam Berabi). He was known for his special prayers and many came to him to ask him to pray for the sick.
