Sefer Bechinat Ha'Olam, a missive authored by the great scholar, the poet Ha'Badrashi. Venice 1546.
The book discusses the moral of this word and the means to reach the world to come.
The numbering of the pages begins with leaf 41, since three compositions which constituted one continuous printing of the book were printed: Mivchar Ha'Pninim, Bechinat Olam, and Even Bochan, which were written by different authors.
This section of the three is the rarest. To the best of our knowledge, it has never been seen in recent auctions.
On the title page (leaf 41) an ancient signature in initials. Under it an inscription: "Mine … Sefer Bechinat Olam … Avraham Yosef Shlomo Graziano…" On the next page, another long inscription handwritten by him: "the property of Avraham … here in Modena, the 24th of Nissan … Avraham Yosef Shlomo". His signature appears in two additional places in the book.
This is the signature of Rabbi Avraham Yosef Shlomo Graziano (circa 1620-circa 1685), the Rabbi of Modena, Italy and head of its yeshiva.
Rabbi Shmuel was known as a great lover of books and had many rare books and manuscripts, on which he signed the initials of his name. Actually, he was the first in Italy who had a collection of Hebrew books and manuscripts and his collection was the largest at the time, both in quality and in quantity, among the Italian collections. Thanks to him, many important manuscripts that were printed in recent years were preserved.
He authored commentaries on the Arba'ah Turim which have yet to be printed. In addition, he wrote many religious songs that were well known in Modena.
Enclosed material.
41-56 leaves. 18 cm.
