Booklet of Kabbalistic Prayers and Kavanot for the Shofar Blower – Manuscript on Parchment – Italy, the 18th Century
Manuscript, Kabbalistic prayers and Kavanot for the Shofar blower. Calligraphic scribal script and Rashi script. With (cut off) glosses on the margins. [Italy? Circa the 18th century]. Nice, impressive manuscript.
The first page of the manuscript contains a preface from the book 'Chemdat Yamim', which was printed for the first time in Izmir in 1732. The passage opens with the words: "After the reading of the Torah he should prepare himself for observing Mitzvat Asseh of blowing the Shofar" and ends with the words: "This is his binding before his God during the blowing of the Shofar". In this passage, the writer integrated a Kabbalistic commentary on the blowing of the Shofar from the book 'Mishnat Chassidim' by Rabbi Emanuel Chai Riki (an Italian Kabbalist), which was printed in Amsterdam in 1727.
The next pages contain the prayers said before the blowing of the Shofar. Before the Psalm of 'La'Menatze'ach', the writer notes that 'by saying this Psalm we sweeten any sentence…"
Then there are three pages containing Kabbalistic prayers for the Shofar blower taken from the book 'Chemdat Yamim'.
Then there is an additional Kabbalistic prayer "briefly containing the Kavanot of the Ari during the blowing of the Shofar". Leaf 5A contains the verses that are said before the blowing of the Shofar and Kabbalistic Kavanot from the book Shnei Luchot Ha'Brit. The writer notes as his source the first edition of the book which was printed in Amsterdam, 1648. Then there are two additional Kabbalistic prayers from 'Pri Etz Chaim' and more. The last page contains the 'Yehi Ratzon' prayer that is said after the blowing of the Shofar.
The uniqueness of the important item before us:
In previous generations there was indeed a custom to write the prayers of the Shofar blower on parchment. However, most of such manuscripts which survived were written in the 19th century. Before is an earlier manuscript from the 18th century!
Manuscripts of the prayers of the blowing of the Shofar are usually written on a single leaf containing the prayers and blessings of the blowing of the Shofar. Sometimes, the manuscript includes two or three leaves. However, the manuscript before us is much longer, containing six leaves! This is due to the fact that the manuscript before us was not a copying of the prayers done for the convenience of the Shofar blower but rather a unique independent Kabbalistic booklet. This is why the manuscript does not contain the blessings and the order of the blowing of the Shofar! This also explains the textual variations in the Kavanot of the manuscript before us as compared to the Kavanot that were printed in the bibliographic books the writer used. It is most likely that the manuscript was made for an important Kabbalist, who edited the Kabbalistic prayers he wanted to say before the blowing of the Shofar.
