Box of a Gabai of a Synagogue - Silver, Wood and Bone - Alt Wein, Silver 13 - circa 1860 - Extremely Rare
Served most likely for keeping notes of the people called up to the reading of the Torah or for some other use in the synagogue.
A rectangular silver box, Niello craftsmanship, with wooden inner covering.
Marked silver, full stamps. Stamp of the date and quality of the silver of Alt Wein, stamp of the artist and stamp of payment of taxes.
On the lid, engraved elements made of wood – the pillars of the Temple, a pair of lions holding the Tablets of the Law and a Torah crown. The Ten Commandments are engraved on the Tablets of the Law.
The inner cloth covering of the lid was most likely replaced by a new one over the years.
On the front, an engraved inscription: "Shabbat Kodesh".
