The Walking Stick of Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv
The walking stick used by the genius Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv for several months during the end of 2003.
The stick is made of metal with a wooden handle, which is slightly worn due to use. Between the handle and the stick there is a golden stripe. The stich can be folded. Its length: 86 cm.
Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv was known for his diligence. Even in his old age he used to sleep only three hours a night. The rest of his hours (except for prayers and meals) were dedicated to the study of the Torah.
Each and every night, at 2:00 AM, Rabbi Eliyashiv used to wake up and begin his study of the Torah. He would pray Shacharit after at least 3(!) hours of study. He moved from his bedroom to the "living room", opened his Gemara and sank into his diligent study. He used to study, deliver lessons and receive the people who came to him with halachic questions until 11:00 PM.
In Sivan 2003, Rabbi Elyashiv broke his leg. Two months later, he underwent emergency surgery to fix an artery after being in immediate mortal danger. To make it easier for him, a Beit Midrash was built for him in a caravan close to his house in the Meah She'arim neighborhood of Jerusalem. Then he was given the walking stick before us, which supported him on his way from his house to the Beit Midrash. He used the stick for two months.
He lived nine more long years until his death on the 28th of Tamuz 2012, being 102 years old.
Condition: Good.
