Long Letter handwritten by Shadal - Rabbi Shmuel David Luzzatto - to His Friend Yashar - the Middle of the 19th Century
Long letter handwritten by Shadal – Rabbi Shmuel David Luzzatto – to his friend Yashar, circa 1850.
Four large pages handwritten in nice, orderly Rashi script, commentary on poems by Rabbi Yehuda Ha'Levi, Rabbi Yosefya Hager, Rabbi Shlomo ibn Gabirol, Rabbi Yitzchak Ben Giat and one long Arabic poem by Rabbi Marzuk. The letter was printed in the book Kerem Chemed that was printed by Rabbi Shmuel Leib Goldenberg [fourth notebook, letter 7].
Rabbi Shmuel David Luzzatto (1800-1865), known by his acronym Shadal, was an Italian scholar, poet, linguist, philosopher and commentator.
The addressee of the letter Rabbi Yashar – Rabbi Yitzchak Shmuel Reggio of Gorizia (1784-1855) was a rabbi philosopher, author and commentator. He was also one of the leaders of the Chochmat Yisrael movement.
In 1822, when the Austrian Emperor Francis I ordered rabbis to study philosophy and sciences, Rabbi Yashar founded the Beit Midrash for rabbis in Padova, which taught these subjects as well. Under the influence of Rabbi Yashar, Rabbi Shadal, who was his close friend, was chosen to be the head of the Beit Midrash.
