A Silver Medal in Honor of the Launching of the First Israeli Research Rocket. Israel, 1962. Rare

A silver medal [hallmarked 935] issued specially in honor of the first Israeli rocket into Space in 1962. 

After a team of Israeli scientists planned and built the rocket it was launched into Space in 1961. With its launching, Israel joined the group of countries who had launched rockets into Space. This medal, designed by Yaakov Zim, was issued to mark the important event. On the front is a relief of the globe with a rocket leaving it and ascending into Space, on the left is the verse "Darach Kochav M'Yaakov" [in Hebrew]. On the edges is the verse's English translation: "There shall come a star out of Jacob". On the back of the medal is the symbol of the State of Israel on the right, and an empty space for the medal's recipient to fill out. On the bottom right is Ben Gurion's signature. Only 560 medals were issued in this series. Refer to the Numismatics Catalog no. 19, page 224.

Weight: 120 gram. Diameter: 6 cm. A few slight scratches.
