Shaare Zedek news, special edition, the Six-Day War, Iyar 1967, with pictures of the hospital during the war
Special issue of the Shaarei Tzedek Hospital News, published at the end of the Six Day War, describes the exemplary coping of the hospital during the war, including treatment of 450 wounded and performing 210 surgeries under fire. In addition to the stories of the wounded, also discussed are important guests who visited the hospital such as Rabbi Jakubowicz, Rachel Yanait Ben-Zvi, Rabbi Aryeh Levin and others.
The Shaarei Tzedek Hospital stood in the old Jaffa Street. It was the first hospital built outside the Old City, and was the westernmost point of the city. The hospital was built by Jews leaving Germany and set new standards of care, hygiene and modernity never before seen in the Middle East. During the First World War the hospital served as an emergency room for wounded Turks, and in it the surrender to the British was signed. During the War of Independence, the hospital filled an important need for those injured during the war. During the Six Day War the building was shelled, but worked around the clock treating the wounded soldiers.
The sheet is lined with a variety of pictures showing the challenges of the hospital during the war – from wounded soldiers to prisoners to newborns
