Two newspapers dedicated to the victims of the 1929 Palestine Riots and the 1936 Arab Revolt
1. A special issue of 'Doar Hayom' (Today's Post) from 2.9.1929.
An issue of the daily newspaper which was published a day after the 'Zefat Massacre' in which 18 Jews were killed. The issue summarizes the events and the names of all the victims from around the country ('The Week of Bloodshed' of the 1929 riots) and presents the opinion of the editor, Ze'ev Jabotinsky as well as a manifest of the High Commissioner Chancellor.
The daily newspaper 'Doar Hayom' was the enterprise of Itamar Ben Yehuda and was published during the years 1919-1936. The newspaper was innovative in content and style, which were influenced by European journalism. In 1929, the newspaper was edited by Ze'ev Jabotinsky.
4 pp.
Condition: Very good.
2. Yizkor – pictures and history of the 18 who were murdered in April 1936.
A booklet commemorating the 18 Jews who were killed during April of the 1936 Arab Revolt. The booklet contains the pictures of those who were murdered with short biographic details. The editor of the booklet, Chaim Shalmoni, was a journalist and poet who wrote and published many humoristic satires. The same year, Shalmoni published an additional booklet about the Jews who were murdered in 1936 named "Kol Ha'Dam" (The Voice of the Blood).
More than 400 Jews were killed during the 1936-1939 Arab Revolt. Those days there was controversy regarding the question of when the revolt had started and who the first victim had been. The common opinion was that the revolt started with the murder of nine Jews and the wounding of ninety more in Jaffa. The booklet before us commemorates "the first victim Yisrael Chazan", as declares the title of the booklet. Yisrael Chazan was a poultry merchant born in Greece who was killed during an ambush near Tul Karem, four days before the bloody event in Jaffa. This rare booklet serves as an important testimony to this historical polemic.
A rare booklet.
8 pp (the pages are uncut).
Condition: Very good.
