Water Pitchers for 'Tahara'. Pápa Chevra Kadisha. End of the 19th Century
Two large pitchers for purifying the dead with a Hebrew caption, 'Chevra Kadisha of Pápa. Hungary, [19th century].
Tin, painted white. Maximum height: 40 cm. Diameter: 20 cm. Large handle for each pitcher.
The pitchers were used for purifying the dead before burial. In many communites, it was customary to pour 9 measures ["kabin"] of water at one time, therefore it was necessary to use large receptacles.
Unusual memento from a prominent Hungarian community that was destroyed during the Holocaust.
Usage marks and wear on the white paint. Fine-very fine condition.
