The Western Wall. Alexandre Bida. Berlin – New York, c. 1880
Les Juifs devant le mur de Salomon. Jews next to the Western Wall. Original, beautiful engraving. Published by Boussod and Valadon according to Alexandre Bida's original illustration. Berlin-New York, c. 1880.
50x60 cm – with the blank margins 70x96 cm. Black and white. French.
Bida made another very similar engraving after he learned about a mistake he made. A prayer book rests on the floor next to a worshipper – a practice unacceptable to Judaism. The new engraving omits this prayer book. Alexandre Bida (1813-1895) was a French artist known as the "Christian Jew". He was an expert on the Orient and a student of Eugne Delacroix. He toured Turkey, Egypt and the Holy Land.
Thick, quality paper. Tear to the edge of the margin of the cardboard. Very fine condition.
