The Holy Land. David Roberts. Travelogue. London, 1856. First Edition, Magnificent Copy
The Holy Land. David Roberts. Travelogue by noted English artist, David Roberts. Hundreds of illustrations. 6 sections in 3 volumes. London, 1856 Day & Son. First edition.
31x21 cm.
Volume 1: Jerusalem and the Galilee, Jordan, and Bethlehem. Volume 2: Edom and Petra, Egypt. Volume 3: Egypt. With 250, numbered lithographic picture plates in brown-black and white. The title page of volume 1 features a lithographic picture of the author's portrait. Impressively beautiful.
Robert's original illustrations were printed by lithograph, but in 1853 they were destroyed in order to make sure that they would not be reprinted in this original format. This is the first edition of the smaller format of this exceptional work, one of the most deluxe, prominent printed works of the 19th century:
Robert's Holy Land.
The plates in this edition are reproductions of the original lithographs, in a smaller size. David Roberts (1796-1864) was a Scottish artist. He was the first British artist to make an independent trip to the Holy Land, in 1838-9. He recorded his trip in text and illustrations.
Original, magnificent, marbleized paper binding with light rubbings. Professional reinforcement to the binding of section 1. Gilt cut leaves. Thick, quality paper, with protective parchment paper over the illustrations. Very few aging stains. Very fine condition. Complete, rare edition.
