Berlin, R, Naftoli Tzvi Yehuda/Meroimei Sadeh. Author’s Manuscript.
Complete commentary to Tractate Ta’anis handwritten by R. Naftoli Tzvi Yehuda Berlin (Netziv).
The Netziv (1816–1893) was one of the greatest rabbinical figures of his era, dean of the Volozhin Yeshiva and author of many important works. Known for his tremendous toil and diligence in Torah, his scholarly works on a wide variety of Torah subjects are an invaluable contribution to rabbinic literature. His daily Talmudic lectures left an indelible imprint on his students – many of whom would go on to fill important rabbinical offices for decades to come – and were known for their combination of sharp analysis and broad erudition. These lectures, meticulously recorded in the Netziv’s own hand, and later published as Meroimei Sadeh, are classics of Talmudic novella.
His first wife was the daughter of R. Yitzchok of Volozhin, the son of R. Chaim of Volozhin. His second wife was his niece, a daughter of Rabbi Yechiel Michel Epstein, the author of the Aruch Ha’Shulchan. A son from his first marriage, R. Chaim Berlin, became the Rav of Moscow and his daughter married R. Refoel Shapiro later dean of the yeshiva in Volozhin. His son from his second marriage was R. Meir Berlin (later Bar-Ilan).
