A Piece of Parchment of a Torah Scroll that had been Saved from a Pogrom – the Torat Chaim Yeshiva of the Old City of Jerusalem, 1920^
A piece of parchment of a Torah scroll with approximately thirteen words. Glued onto paper with a black frame. A handwritten Hebrew inscription from those days: "It is God's revenge! Chol Ha'Moed Pesach 5680 [1920] at the Torat Chaim Yeshiva, Hebron Street Jerusalem".
During the 1920 Riots, the Yeshiva, where the most prominent rabbis studied in their youth, was destroyed. The Arabs looted the Yeshiva, tearing the Torah scrolls and setting fire in its synagogue. A famous photograph depicts the broken Holy Ark with the Torah scrolls rolling out of it. Before us is a holy, painful remnant of those difficult times, in which dozens of Jews were murdered and hundreds injured.
Size of parchment: 9x17 cm.
Condition: Good. Wear and damp stains.
