Besamim Rosh Responsa – First Edition – Polemic
Besamim Rosh Responsa, three hundred ninety six halachic responses attributed to Rabbeinu Asher – the Rosh – and to other Rishonim, with the "Kassah De'Harsana" commentary by Rabbi Shaul berlin.
Berlin, 1793. First edition.
The book "Besamim Rosh" stood at the center of great controversy: Rabbi Mordechai Bennet, the Chatam Sofer and others claimed that the book was a forgery and the responses were not written by the Rosh, but rather by the publisher of the book, Rabbi Shaul Berlin. The authenticity of the book has remained controversial to this very day. According to what is written on the title page of the book, the responsa was edited by an unfamiliar Sephardic rabbi named Rabbi Yitzchak di Mulina.
