"To the Buyers of the Shas!" - a Festive Advertisement about the Printing of the Shas by The Widow and Brothers Romm in Vilnius - 1881 - Bibliographically Unknown
"To the buyers of the Shas!" - a festive, interesting advertisement printed by the Widow and Brothers Romm, the printers of the Shas in Vilnius (which served as the base for all subsequent editions). At the bottom of the advertisement, the date: 19th of Shevat 5641 [1881]. The advertisement is bibliographically unknown and does not appear in libraries in Israel.
At the first, the publishers announce: "we have finished printing this volume of the Shabbat tractate of the Shas which is published by us … this we have completed four volumes of the Shas".
The printers express their joy at their success so far. Among others, they excitedly recall that "we have now found glosses by the Vilna Gaon for Seder Zera'im … and we have printed them with this volume … as well as novellae by the author of Pri Chadash for Seder Zera'im … we have also found … in Italy Piskei Tosfot in an old manuscript".
An important peek into the historical enterprise of the printing of the Talmud.
The printers knew that a great responsibility is laid on them when printing a precise, elegant edition of the Talmud, which will serve from now on as the Talmud of the Jewish nation. They approached the task with awe praying that the Talmud they were about to print will not contain any errors. To do so, they made an effort to find the first and most precise editions of the Talmud and its commentators, some of which were printed in their authors' lifetime and were even proofread by them. Due to the responsibility they felt, they implore the learners of the Talmud that "if they find an omission or an error even in one letter of the Shas, to notify us so we will correct it in the future and God will repay them in kind".
At the end of the advertisement, the printers describe the "division of the printing of the volumes of the Shas". All in all, twenty five volumes will be printed, the order of which will be determined by the completion of "the editing and proofreading of the manuscripts of the commentary and additional glosses".
On the margins of the advertisement, signed (by printing): "the words of the printers the Widow and Brothers Romm".
