The Reception of Rabbi Moshe Shapira, the son of Rabbi Pinchas of Koretz, as Av Beit Din of Slavita - the Original Leaf of the Community Notebooks - [1792]
The document before us is an original leaf of the community notebook of Slavita which tells of the joining of Rabbi Moshe Shapira as a member of "Chavurat Ner Tamid" of Slavita. His appointment as Av Beit Din of the community is also mentioned.
The document praises Rabbi Moshe and his virtues and is signed by "Avraham … Shmuel".
Then there is another inscription from 1907 regarding the "Chavurat Ner Tamid" signed by three of its keaders (among them, the Shliach Tzibur of Slavita).
Rabbi Moshe Shapira was born to his father Rabbi Pinchas of Koretz. After his father's death in 1791, he moved to Slavita. The rabbi of the town, Rabbi Ya;akov Shimshon, gave him his position of rabbi. Since Rabbi Moshe did not want to take advantage of the position, he opened in 1792, a printing house to earn his living from.
The Slavita Shas and the other books that were printed by this printing house were known for their purity and holiness since Rabbi Moshe and his sons used to immerse themselves in a Mikveh before starting their work as printers as well as the letters used for printing, which were cast by Rabbi Moshe.
