Chukei Chaim, by Rabbi Chaim Avraham Gagin (Aga”n). Jerusalem, 1843. Printing press of Yisrael Bak. The first book of halacha printed in Jerusalem and one of the early books printed there. S. HaLevi number 11.
With the special responsum on the polemic about the Yisrael Bak printing press in Jerusalem. Interesting and rare.
In the center of the title page is an engraving of the printer’s symbol, which he brought with him to Israel from his printing press in Berdichev.

The author Rabbi Avraham Gagin (1787- 1848), the Rishon L’Zion, Kabbalist and one of the leading scholars of his generation. He was the first to officially receive the title “Chacham Bashi” in 1842). He served as Rosh Yeshiva of the “Beit El” Kabbalistic yeshiva in Jerusalem. He was one of those who helped Yisrael Bak to establish his printing press in Jerusalem, and printed his books there.

In Siman 33 is a responsum from the author regarding the polemic of the printer Yisrael Bak with Rabbi Yoel son of Rabbi Chaim of Koritz regarding the “Tehillim without commentary that Reb Yisrael printed which was sent to Izmir…and drowned at sea”.

Condition: Good-Very Good. High-quality leaves. Two leaves are missing at the end of the book (completed by facsimile. The leaves contain the end of the index and the proofreader’s apology). New binding.
