Brent Shpigel, Mar’ah Ha’Sorefet. By Rabbi Moshe Altschuler. “And it is a book replete with moral rebukes…it should be read constantly as it ignites the hearts like a flame with the cinders of the sages who transferred the Torah...therefore, in order for the masses to benefit from it, as over time it was hardly found, and there is almost one per city and two per family who possess this book, it was brought to a special printing house of high caliber…”. Frankfurt, 1706. Yiddish. The entire text is in Tze’ena URe’ena script.

In almost all known copies of this edition, the detail of the year and place of printing on the title page is Frankfurt, 1706. Before us is an especially rare copy, which also contains a pre-title page. The text is mostly similar, but at the bottom is written: “…[Printed] in Amsterdam script…here in Frankfurt am Main in the house of Johann Wust…1703…”. On this title page, the printer’s name is mentioned, in contrast with the 1706 title page. This is the book’s original title page, as the printing indeed began in 1703, but the printing was delayed for three years, and most of it was eventually printed in 1706. Due to the delay in printing, a new title page was prepared, and the old title page from 1703 was disposed of. However, the copy before us also has the early title page and is therefore extremely rare. Refer to: Ginzei Yisrael, Mehlman, 1389. In the copy photographed there, the title page is blemished. In the copy before us it is whole.

On the endpapers are ancient inscriptions and signatures from the 18th century, in Hebrew and Latin script.

The book itself is rare, and is not listed in the Hebrew Bibliography. The copy before us is even more rare, due to the original title page. In addition, the copy is in unusually good condition in comparison with other copies.

114 leaves. 21 cm.

Condition: Good. Original leather-covered wooden binding, with etched illustrations. The bindings are detached. Spine is missing.
