Torat Ha'Chatat by the Rama (Rabbi Moshe Isserles) - Krakow, 1577 - Second Revised Edition - Scholarly Glosses in Ancient Handwriting
"Zot Torat Ha'Chatat - includes all the laws of Issur and Heiter which are customary in Poland, Lithuania and Reisen and Ashkenaz". By the Rama. Krakow, 1577.
On the title page: "and now it has been reprinted and added to the first which has been printed from the book proofread by Rabbi Moshe Isserles in his handwriting". An extremely rare edition which has not been seen in auctions!
This book symbolizes the essence of the Rama's religious literary enterprise. The book was printed for the first time in 1569. Before us is the second edition which includes many glosses and additions by the author. The book was printed in Krakow, where the author served as a rabbi and where he is buried. The book has become an important basic book among learners.

The Glosses
On the first leaf of the book, an ancient gloss: "… Ya'akov".
Throughout the book, on the margins of the leaves, dozens of early glosses by different writers. These glosses include more than 15 scholarly glosses by three early writers (most likely form the time of printing). They have, undoubtedly, been written by a prominent rabbi of the time. In addition, there are dozens of lingual corrections, additions of missing words and the like. In some of the short glosses, the initials "כ"א" appear. The writers' identities are unknown.

The name of the book as it appears on the title page is "Zot Torat Ha'Chatat". This name appears also in other early editions of the book. This however, is an error, since the Rama has written in his preface: "… and I have seen it fit to title this small composition Torat Ha'Chatat".

The book ends on leaf 84. The copy before us does not contain 19, [1] leaf, which do appear in some of the copies and contain indices and "table of errors".
Condition: Good. Detached (non-original) binding. Tears and stains on the first, detached, leaf with damage to text. On the second leaf, slight damage to text, restored. Tears and loose leaves. Leaves 66-84 (which have most likely been completed from another copy) are larger, detached and have moth signs with no damage to text. Most of the scholarly glosses are readable.
