"Azhara Rabba V'Issur Gamur". Appeal from the leaders of Torah Jewry to ban mixed synagogues in America. 1920s
[1] printed leaf. Blue ink on brown paper. 29x47 cm.
In the 1920s, a number of Orthodox [!] synagogues in America took down the mechitzas that divided the men and women sections. This was previously only acceptable in Reform congregations.
This placard was signed by prominent rabbis in America, Europe, and Eretz Yisrael. It appeals to the community to distance themselves from the synagogues that instituted this breach. "The geonei Yisrael have already announced and proved that it is completely forbidden according to the Talmud and poskim, and these synagogues are making changes to the Jewish customs, and previous gaonim have excommunicated them......"
The placard was printed on behalf of the Union of Orthodox Rabbis of the United States and Canada, but was atypically signed by rabbis from throughout the Jewish world, including the Chofetz Chaim; Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodzenski of Vilna; Rabbi Kook [the Chief Rabbi of Jerusalem at the time]; Rabbi Meir Arik av"d Tarnow; Rabbi Yitzchak Yeruchem Diskin, leading rabbi of the yishuv hayshan in Jerusalem, and more [printed signatures]. The placard is written in Hebrew and Yiddish.
Rare placard that is not in the National Library.
Marginal tears, loss in the left side - from the middle of the page until its bottom - not affecting text.
Moderate-fine condition.
