Important document from the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, regarding Jewish rights to the Western Wall. Jerusalem, 1959
[2] official leaves from the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, typewritten, 28x22 cm.
Interesting document written during the period that the Western Wall was in Jordanian hands. The document is typewritten on the letterhead of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jerusalem, under the title "HaKotel HaMa'aravi". Signed by P. Eliav. The document lists various historical and political reasons why the Jews have the right to free access to the Western Wall. "Since the destruction of the Holy Temple, the Jews have customarily gathered in the shadow of the wall to pray...the sanctity of the Western Wall in the Jewish religion has been recognized by the various governments who ruled Palestine since the destruction of the Holy Temple...the negation of the rights of Jews to access the Western Wall can be compared to the renunciation of Christian access to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre or Moslem access to the Kaaba."
The document is dated the 19th of Av, 1959. The document was apparently written to be sent to Jordan on behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, or at least, served as a draft for a document with similar content that was transferred to the Jordanian government. Not in the National Library.
Very fine condition.
