Dissertations on the Prophecies of the Old Testament, by David Levi, a Well-Known English Jew - English - London, 1793 - Important and Rare
Reb David Levi, an English Jewish writer (1742-1801), the translator of many prayer books and Machzorim. He defended Judaism in his responses to the English priest Dr. Joseph Priestley.
In 1786, Priestley published a letter to the Jews in an attempt to convince them to become Christians. Levi wrote him a public response: "Letters to Dr. Priestley, in response to the letters he addressed to the Jews", which led to the three volumes of the composition before us on the prophecies (1793-1800). He printed and published the books by himself. Before us is the first volume of the three sections.

Levi argues with Priestley and defends the Jewish religion, presenting evidence from the prophets and their prophecies against the Christian faith about the Messiah.
The book had great influence on both Jewish and Christian intellectuals.

Several ink stamps of the library of the Chambers synagogue in England.
Inside the book there is a single leaf from the book of the well-known philosopher Immanuel Kant (English translation) "Elements of the Critical Philosophy" (London, 1798).

310 pp. 23x15 cm.
Condition: Thick leaves. The front binding and several of the leaves are detached from the spine. Stains and tears, especially on the spine, with no damage to text.
