At a young age, he was appointed by the government as Dayan of Debdou. He was both a Torah scholar and Dayan and a very rich person who had contacts with the government.
In 1884, the French officer de Foucauld visited Rabbi Marciano's home, putting the safety of the community at risk. De Foucauld's mission ended safely and in 1933, the French government gave the family a decoration to express its gratitude. During the years 1880-1903, he served as the Nagid of the community. He was one of the major opposes to the Buchamara Revolt, remaining loyal to the king of Morocco. The leader of the revolt imprisoned him for three years. Due the torutres he suffered in prison, he died in 1907. His grandson was Rabbi Moshe Marciano, author of the "Moreshet Moshe" responsa. In his old age, he immigrated to Israel.
