Passover Haggadah according to the Ashkenazic Custom - London, 1770 - the First in the World with an English Translation - Extremely Rare!
Passover Haggadah according to the Ashkenazic Custom, with an English translation. London, [1770]. W. Gilbert printing press. Hebrew and English page by page. Yiddish instructions.
This is the first Haggadah in the world with an English translation! The laws and explanations are written in English. The Piyutim at the end of the Haggadah and Seder Sefirat Ha'Omer are accompanied by a Hebrew-Yiddish translation instead of the English translation.

There were two communities in London – Ashkenazic and Sephardic. Therefore, the publisher printed two similar, yet different, Haggadot - for Ashkenazim and Sephardim. Both had an identical title page. Before us is the Ashkenazic version.

This Haggadah is extremely rare. To the best of our knowledge, it has never been seen in auctions. It does not appear in the National Library or any other library in Israel. In the Bibliography of the Hebrew Book, it is written: "We have only seen a photocopy of the title page".

The parallel Haggadah, the Sephardic one, was sold in an auction only once for the price of ִ$30,000.

Ya'ari 167; Yudelov, 257.
43 leaves. The last leaf with the last verse of "Chad Gadya" is missing.
Two other leaves are missing in the middle of the Haggadah, but it seems that the copy before us was printed like that, and maybe other copies as well.

In the copy before us, after the title page, an additional Haggadah has been bound (described hereinafter) and after it, the aforementioned Haggadah from 1770. The binder put the title page of the London Haggadah before the two Haggadot so that it may serve as a title page for both.
On the first leaf of the additional Haggadah, the following title was printed: "Haggadah on (!) Passover - פארטראג אויף דיא ביידן ערשטן אבנדע פאן פסח". This is the first, rare edition of the well-known Haggadah of the members of the Enlightenment Movement, which was printed in Berlin in 1785. This Haggadah contains a Hebrew-Yiddish translation by Yoel Brill. Moshe Mendelson's name is also mentioned on the title page of the Haggadah as one of its translators. In this edition only, several Hebrew comments by Yitzchak Stanov were printed. In the many editions that followed, these comments were omitted.
20 leaves. Originally, 58 leaves.

11x17.5 cm.
Condition: Both Haggadot are in good condition. Wear due to use, especially of the title page and the last leaf. Wine stains.
