The background to this work: In 1863, a Jewish member of the Enlightenment by the name of Zvi Graetz published a commentary to the book of Isiah (chapters 52-53), in which he seems to deny the coming of the Messiah. According to Austrian law at the time, it was illegal to publicize anything which is offensive to the beliefs of any of the country's citizens, and therefore Graetz was brought to trial. The judges requested from Rabbi Eliezer HaLevi Horowitz and Rabbi Yitzchak Noach Manheim to present their opinion as to whether there was any offence, and they testified that his words were not offensive. There were those who protested against the Rabbi's testimony. This book comes to strengthen the Rabbi's opinion and to prove Graetz's innocence.
