Passover Haggadah - Amsterdam, 1695 - the First in the World with Copper Engravings - With an Attached Map of the Land of Israel - for Ashkenazim, Sephardim, Yiddish and Ladino - Extremely Rare
"Seder Haggadah shel Pesach with a nice commentary and nice illustrations of the miracles God performed for our fathers and in addition, the journeys through the desert until the division of the country to the twelve tribes of Israel [meaning, the map at the end of the book] and the design of the Tempe … engraved on copper plates…"
Three advantages of this Haggadah:
The first Haggadah that was illustrated with copper engravings! Impressive illustrations that were printed later in other Haggadot.
With the map of the Land of Israel!
According to the customs of the Ashkenazim and Sephardim! Instructions both in Yiddish and in Ladino!
Until the printing of this Haggadah, engraving used to be made with wood, as explained in the title page of the book "In the past, the designs were engraved on wood". In this Haggadah, the engravings are copper ones, made by "the young man Avraham bar Ya'akov of the family of Abraham" (a German priest from the Rhein region who came to Amsterdam and converted to Judaism). 14 large, spectacular engravings (half a page each), demonstrating the stories of the Haggadah.
The Haggadah includes two commentaries: "Abravanel Commentary" from his book "Zevach Pesach" and "Peirush al pi Sod" from the book "Shnei Luchot Ha'Brit". It is interesting that two seemingly opposite commentaries appear side by side - the Abravanel Commentary is rational, according to the Peshat while "Peirush al pi Sod" is kabbalist, according to the Derash.
Another interesting combination that appears in the Haggadah is the fact that it is meant for both Sephardim and Ashkenazim, combining Piyutim of both traditions, two versions of Birkat Ha'Mazon, instructions for both traditions and more. Moreover, the editor of the Haggadah assumes that Hebrew is not the everyday language of its readers; therefore, the instructions are given in a language that is familiar to them: Yiddish and Ladino. The instructions accompanying the Ashkenazi Birkat Ha'Mazon appear in Yiddish while those accompanying the Sephardic one - in Ladino. Such duplication is fitting of Amsterdam, where the Haggadah was printed, and where the two communities, the Ashkenazic and Sephardic ones, lived side by side. Most unique!
At the end of the book, a folded map of the Land of Israel, with sketches of the division of the land to the tribes. The map is according to the map of Cana'an of Christian van Adrichem.
This Haggadah served as the basis for many later editions of the Haggadah. An extremely rare Haggadah!
(1), 26 leaves, (1) folded map. 30 cm.
Condition: Good-Very Good. The first title page has small tears and slight omission, the rest of the book is in good-very good condition. Stains (as in any Haggadah), very slight flaws at the margins of the leaves.
The map is in fair condition. Tears in several places, omission and flaws.
The binding is original, leather with an impression of a crown and the inscription "Haggadah shel Pesach". The impression is on both sides of the binding. The binding is worn with omission and flaws.
Extremely rare, most impressive!
