Rabbi Aryeh Levin - A Letter of Humility demonstrating Rabbi Levin's Modesty, Virtues, Piety and Honest Self-Examination - Unusual!
An unusual letter written by the Tzadik of Jerusalem Rabbi Aryeh Levin, "Father of Priosners", to the Rishon Le'Zion Rabbi Yitzchak Nissim. 1963.
The letter is a response to Rabbi Nissim's letter, which had included praise for Rabbi Aryeh Levin. Rabbi Levin answers that he has examined himself and has found himself lacking and so that Rabbi Nissim's words should not be denied, he will start improving his ways as much as possible…

Rabbi Aryeh Levin (1885-1969), a genius and Tzadik who was known for his work for the poor and the sick. He was ordained by his rabbi, Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak Ha'Cohen Kook, and Rabbi Chaim Berlin. He served as a Mashgiach at the "Etz Chaim" Talmud Torah.
He was also dubbed the "Father of Prisoners" for his visits to members of the Jewish underground imprisoned in the Central Prison of Jerusalem in the Russian Compound during the British Mandate.
His virtues and great modesty, his love of Israel, love of the Torah and love of God all combined to form an exceptional personality.
His modesty and humility are demonstrated by the following story about his apartment:
His apartment in the Mishkenot Yisrael neighborhood was small and meager in content. The pleas of his relatives who wanted to improve his living conditions were met with total refusal, as he told one of his friends: "many times they tried to convince me to move to a more spacious apartment yet I refused. Look, after a long life, man is led from his apartment to this place (cemetery). For me, the move will not be difficult since there is no great difference between my room and this place".
