"The letters that were published by the Polish Cardinals are full of hatred of Jews only they add that nevertheless riots should be avoided…" - Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodzinski Unveils the Greatest Christian Priests - A Most Unusual Letter Signed by Him - 1936
A letter by Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodzinski to Rabbi Yitzchak Isaac Ha'Levi Herzog, then the rabbi of Ireland.
The letter is about extensive actions against anti-Semitism, which was disseminated those days by Christian priests, and which Rabbi Herzog devotedly fought with additional rabbis.
Rabbi Chaim Ozer writes: "The letters that were published by the Polish Cardinals are full of hatred of Jews only they add that nevertheless riots should be avoided…". Rabbi Grodzinski adds: "it had been good if there was a reply letter or a hint given by the head of the church without spreading hatred among the nations…"
Unfortunately, the Holocaust, a few years later, confirmed Rabbi Chaim Ozer's words. It is interesting to note that the addressee, Rabbi Herzog, who sacrificed himself for saving Jews during the Holocaust and after it, spoke harsh words against the anti-Semite Cardinal of Lodz during his journey to Poland. Two thousand years of hatred by the gentiles are still not over…
Rabbi Chaim also addresses the halachic issue of selling non-kosher meat to gentiles and Jews' ability to open butcher shops in accordance with the law and the possibility that due to these law, the price of meat will become more expensive. All this, of course, is related to the difficulty of conducting Jewish life there. He ends his letter: "The situation in general is awful, God have mercy".
Rabbi Chaim Ozer's signature at the end of the letter.
