Leaf Written in Nice Handwriting from the 15th or 16th Century, from an Unknown Composition that has Never Been Published about the Structure of the Universe - Most Likely the Author's Autograph - Added to the book "Marot Ha'Tzovot" by Ha'Alshich Ha'Kadosh, 1603
The manuscript is about the structure of the universe. The composition interprets an earlier composition by an author who is called in the manuscript "Ha'Mechaber" (the author). The author of the manuscript before us refers to the book of Claudius Ptolemaeus (the Greek astronomer Ptolemy of the 2nd century). Among others, he writes: "and it should be said that Ptolemy's words and the words of Ha'Mechaber (the author) are both correct".
It is most likely the author's autograph since he erases with a line a whole passage. On the side of one of the pages, an illustration demonstrating the author's words. A short handwritten comment on the margins of the second page.
To the best of our knowledge, this is a composition that has never been published. Important, interesting content that has not been studied.

The Greek astronomer Ptolemy (Claudius Ptolemaeus). Ptolemy was the author of several scientific treatises, three of which were of continuing importance to later Byzantine, Islamic and Europeanscience. The first is the astronomical treatise now known as the Almagest, which introduces his astronomical doctrine - the geocentric model. He was considered the most important astronomer of ancient times. According to Ptolemy's doctrine, earth stands at the center of the universe with the other astronomical bodies around it. The planets move in a circular route around the sun. For each planet, Ptolemy assumed a central circular route around earth (whose center is incongruent with the center of earth) and a secondary circular route whose center is located on the perimeter of the central circle with the planet moving along its perimeter. The observable movement of the planet is thus its movement on these two circular routes. This model was adopted by the Catholic Church and thus held on for approximately 1500 years. The book was preserved in Arab manuscripts and only during the 16th century was rediscovered to the Europeans.
Many compositions were written on Ptolemy's model. Sephardic rabbis also discussed the model, headed by Rabbi Avraham Bar Chiya Ha'Nassi in his book "Tzurat Ha'Aretz".

One leaf written on both its sides. 30 lines on each page.
Condition: Very Good. Clean, minor moth marks with no damage to text.
The manuscript is bound at the end of a book. It was most likely used as the binding of the book and that is how it had survived.
The book:
Marot Ha'Tzovot - commentary on Nevi'im Rishonim Ve'Achronim: Yehoshua, Shoftim, Shmuel, Melachim, Yesha'ayau, Yirmiyahu, Trei Assar. By Rabbi Moshe Alshich. Venice, 1603-1607. First edition. Zuan Di Gara Printing Press. Published by the author's son, Rabbi Chaim. The book contains only the commentary.
The date on the title page is 1603; however, the date on the colophon is 1607. It is common knowledge that it took the author's son several years to complete the printing of the book.
68, 62, 67-144 leaves. The title page is missing as well as the last leaf (completed by hand). 27 cm.
Condition: Good. No binding. Slight moth damage.
