Collection of Letters by Rabbi Yitzchak Isaac Ha'Levi Herzog regarding the Saving of Rabbis and Yeshivas during the Holocaust
Letters and telegrams, official letters from the Jewish Agency and correspondence with Rabbis and leaders of American Jewry, regarding the rescue of Rabbis and primarily the Yeshiva students in Shanghai.
The collection contains:
a. Drafts in Rabbi Herzog's handwriting (in English) of the content of telegrams which he sent: drafts of telegrams on behalf of Rabbi Eliezer Finkel, who was then in Jerusalem, to Rabbi Avraham Kalmanowitz in America and Harry Goodman in London, regarding the poor condition of the Yeshiva students in Shanghai; the draft of a telegram from Rabbi Herzog to Dr. Stefan Weiss, one of the leaders of the Reform movement and American Jewry, and to the Union of Orthodox Rabbis of America.
b. A printed telegram from Rabbi Aharon Kotler, and a handwritten telegram from the Union of Orthodox Rabbis, regarding pressure from the American government on Soviet Russia to permit Rabbis to leave during the war
c. An official letter from the Jewish Agency, October 1943, signed by Chaim Barlas from the Va'ad Hatzala, to Rabbi Herzog, with a request from him to utilize connections in the Vatican. The response of the Chief Rabbinate, with Rabbi Uziel's signature that the Greek, Latin and Armenian Patriarchs evaded for various reasons.
d. An official letter from the Immigration Office of the Interim Israeli Government, November 1948, signed by Moshe Shapira, to Rabbi Herzog, regarding visas for the she'erit ha'pleta in Shanghai.
e. A letter from Rabbi Herzog to Moshe Shapira, Chanuka 1940, regarding Israeli visas for Rabbi Eliezer Yehuda Finkel, Rabbi Aharon Kotler and the Modzitzer Rebbe.
f. A collection of photocopies, valuable for research, of documents and letters related to Rabbi Herzog's actions with the She'erit HaPleita during and after the Holocaust.
g. Translations from English to Hebrew of reports from the Union of Orthodox Rabbis of America.
h. A rich journalistic archive, authentic issues and photocopies, which document the rescue activities during the Holocaust.
Rabbi Yitzchak Isaac HaLevi Herzog (1889-1959) was the Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of the Land of Israel from 1936 up until his death. He previously served as the Chief Rabbi of Ireland, was known as a great Torah scholar and was accepted by all of the factions. During the Holocaust he made great efforts to save Jews.
Condition: Most of the material is in very good condition.
