Siftei Yeshenim - Amsterdam, 1680 - The First Hebrew Bibliographic Composition - First Edition - Signature of Rabbi Ya'akov Weill of Karlsruhe
Siftei Yeshenim – the first composition about the history of printed Hebrew books. This is the first bibliographic composition in Hebrew. More than 2,200 books and manuscripts in all areas of Judaism are listed. The book lists, in an alphabetic order, the names of the books, the names of their authors and their content. By Rabbi Shabtai Meshorer Bas. Amsterdam, David Tartas printing press, 1680. The title page is in an illustrated, decorated frame.
Ancient signatures on the title page and the forsazt leaves, among them an inscription: "… Ya'akov … of Schwabach", "belongs to … Ya'akov Weill of Karlsruhe". This is most likely the signature of Rabbi Ya'akov Weill, author of "Torat Shabbat" (Karlsruhe, 1840), the son of Rabbi Avraham Weill and the grandson of Rabbi Yedidya Weill, the rabbi of Karlsruhe. Died in 1852.
Many theoretical glosses in ancient script on the leaves of the book.
