Divrei Shmuel Responsa - Venice, 1702 – Single Edition - the Ban on Shabtai Zvi - Handwritten Glosses
Divrei Shmuel Responsa, by Rabbi Shmuel Abuhav, one of the great Rabbis of Italy. Venice, 1702. Single edition.
Rabbi Shmuel Abuhav served as the Av Beit Din of Venice from the year 1650 until the end of his life. He was one of the main opponents of Shabtai Zvi and his student Nathan of Gaza. At the end of the book is a special chapter with the title: "A reminder for the People of Israel – A Written Document in the Name of the General Yeshiva in the Matter of Shabtai Zvi and Nathan of Gaza". This chapter deals with the excommunication of Shabtai Zvi and Nathan of Gaza, and contains the report of the Rabbis of Venice who questioned Nathan of Gaza, and a letter of protest against the cancellation of the fast days by the Sabbateans. Similarly, a correspondence between the author and Rabbi Yaakov Shishportash regarding Shabtai Zvi is quoted.
In the book are four short glosses in ancient handwriting, one of them a reference to the book "Tov Eyin" by the Chida.
