Extraordinary, unpublished manuscript, recounting the trial of Jews arrested by the Inquisition and the subsequent events of the auto-da-fé held in Mexico in 1747. [“The saintly Tribunal of Faith tirelessly fights against the corrupted, false and detestable Hebraic sect, that by deceptive paths journies toward the dark abyss where Satan reigns, yet proud to be adored by the sectarians of impiety, keen to snatch from the Lord those souls blinded by seditious preaching by mindless observers of the eternally cursed and detestable Law of Moses which has caused so much bitter tears to humanity.”] The manuscript recounts the Auto de Fe processes against 23 woman and men accused of Judaism, most of whom stem from Portugal. “[Where] it seems, that cursed seed has bloomed, especially, in those lands of Portugal.” The procedures are recounted in exacting detail: Crowds gathered well before sunrise. At 6am, the prisoners left from the Casa del Santo Oficio to the Cathedral ringed guards. While all church-bells tolled, a lengthy procession was seen: Inquisitors, priests, soldiers and of course, the hapless prisoners. The manuscript then records the names of each of the condemned Jewish heretics, their personal history, the crimes of which they were accused, and their subsequent punishment. Further details, available upon request.
