A long, handwritten description in which the anonymous writer describes his visits to the places of Torah and prayer in the Old City of Jerusalem. He descriptively describes the holy atmosphere which permeates the city, and gives detailed descriptions of the situation of its Study Halls and Synagogues.
The writer's identity is unknown. At the top of the page is written in block script: "YP". Without note of the year (written before 1887). As far as we know, this important description was never printed and is completely unknown.
The description includes interesting and unknown facts about the life of Torah in the Old Yishuv.
The writer begins with a description of his sorrow when he stood across from the sight of the Temple which was destroyed "wild animals stepped on the plantation of G-d". The writer found consolation in the center of the life of the Old Yishuv in those days - the courtyard of the Churva of Rabbi Yehuda HaChassid, with all of its important buildings and institutions, and at their head "Tiferet Beit Yaakov" - the great synagogue which is located in the "Churva". He also gained much pleasure from the students of Torah who learn in the middle of the night, as part of the group "Or Torah" in the study hall "Menachem Zion" which is at the edge of the Churva courtyard. The writer describes the students in the study hall, and describes a party which he was invited to "to celebrate with them the completion of the Talmud and Poskim". "My soul was satiated with much pleasure…when a speech was given…Rabbi Moshe Nechemiah Cohanav, the Rosh Yeshiva here in the Holy city in the Etz Chaim Yeshiva…when he finished speaking, the aforementioned great man called me to come and see the buildings of the Talmud Torah and the Yeshiva Etz Chaim…", which were also located in the courtyard of the Churva. Here the writer details the various rooms and departments in the Talmud Torah and the Yeshiva, and notes the names of the gabbaim (erasing signs on their names, but they are readable), "whose names have already been mentioned for the good in the journals Hamaggid, Halevanon and Chavatzelet". He ends his description with very happy descriptions: "praised is the eye which has seen all of this!".
On the back page the writer adds a description of his visit to the synagogue "Beit Yaakov" and "Yeshivat Ba'alei Batim" which is one of the synagogue's rooms, and the study hall "Sha'arei Zion".
On the side of the page is an addition in different handwriting. This writer added some words to the article, seemingly in preparation for its publishing.
A rare and interesting item! From the flowery language and the glosses, it seems that this was an important article which was prepared for printing in a newspaper or in an advertisement booklet, in order to assist the institutions of the Old Yishuv located in the Churva of Rabbi Yehuda HaChassid and to obtain donations from Jews in the Diaspora.
Condition: Fair-Good. Creases. Tears with a small amount of damage to text.
One page, written on both sides.
20.5x26cm.
