Jerusalem – An Early Drawing of Moshe Mokady – Oil on Cardboard – 1930's
Moshe Mokady (1902 – 1975) was born in Galicia, Poland. He studied painting in Vienna under Lazar Krestin, and in Zurich. In 1920 he immigrated to Israel and lived in Jerusalem and in Tel Aviv.
He managed a school for sketching and drawing in Jerusalem. In the year 1949 he served as the manager of the Art Department of the Ministry of Education and Culture. In the years 1952 – 1965 he directed Machon Avni for painting and sculpture in Tel Aviv. He received the Dizengoff prize for drawing 3 times.
In the years 1952 and 1958 he represented Israel in biennale in Venice.
Mokady was one of the first Israeli painters to deal with modern painting and in particular with abstract painting. His works found their place with collectors all over the world.
When he painted Jerusalem Mokady used dark thick and reserved colors – factors which intensify the experience of looking at the work of art. The balance between the upper section of the picture (the sky) and the lower part (the houses) is clearly felt. This work of art, due to the sealed material, the dark colors and the large amount of flux in it, transport the viewer to Jerusalem of 80 years ago, and to enter into his emotions.
Size: 48*34 cm.
Condition: Very Good. Two small rips in the upper section.
