Hanhagos Beis Haknesses. Amsterdam 1776. Rare!
Customs of the Ashkenazic Synagogue of Amsterdam in Yiddish-Deutsch.
With customs for weekdays, Shabbos and Yom Tov as well as important communal events, these customs provide a glimpse into the inner workings of one of Europe’s most prominent kehillos.
The first Ashkenazim who arrived in Amsterdam were refugees of the Chmielnicki pogroms in Poland (1648-49). Their numbers soon swelled, eventually outnumbering the Sephardic community at the end of the 17th century. In 1671, the Ashkenazic community inaugurated their own synagogue, “The Great Synagogue” which stood opposite the Sephardic Esnoga Synagogue.
Vinograd Amsterdam 2052. Jacob Proops press. 12 pages. 16 cm. Fine condition. Staining. Antique vellum binding (bent).
