Rabbi Yitzchak Ha'Levi Herzog – Long Response to an Interesting Question – Signature and Many Comments in his Handwriting – Jerusalem, the Forties
Long, important halachic answer by Rabbi Yitzchak Isaac Herzog to a difficult question in the laws of Milah by Rabbi Yehuda Leib Zeltzer. Includes many comments and corrections in his handwriting.
Rabbi Herzog was asked whether to circumcise a child whom it was known that the circumcision would cause temporary damage to his fertility, which could be corrected six months later by surgery. The greatest rabbis in the USA could not reach a decision on the matter and the chairman of the Union of Orthodox Rabbis in the USA and Canada sent a letter to Rabbi Herzog, asking his opinion. The answer was printed on stencil and includes a description of the halachic debate on the matter. The letter includes many comments, additions and glosses in the handwriting of Rabbi Herzog. The answer was also printed in his book 'Pesakim U'Chtavim' pp. 267-269.
Rabbi Yitzchak Isaac Ha'Levi Herzog (1889-1959) served as a rabbi in Ireland since 1915. In 1936, after rabbi Kook's death, he was asked to immigrate to Israel and replace Rabbi Kook as the Chief Rabbi. He served as the Chief rabbi until his death.
