Ohr HaYashar - The "Cleves Get" Controversy. Amsterdam, 1769. First Edition

Ohr HaYashar - responsa, halachic rulings and articles from 1766-1768 about the "Cleves Get" affair, edited by Rabbi Aharon Shimon of Copenhagen, "Sofer D'Medinat Kolonia." Amsterdam, 1769. Complete first edition, including the table of errata.

The 'Cleves Get' controversy is one of the most famous halachic controversies. This controversy shook the rabbinic world of the time, following a get that was given by a (slightly?) mentally unstable man. The get was arranged by Rabbi Shmuel Lipschutz, rabbi of Cleves, and followed by a roiling halachic dispute that broke out among the rabbis of the time in several countries, regarding the divorcé and the question as to whether the ruling of "shoteh" applied to him. This topic has been discussed through the generations; rules about the definition of "shoteh" were determined from this controversy, and many articles have been written on the subject. Before us is the fundamental book on this affair, and the responsa printed in it are the foundation stone of halachic ruling on the subject.

[7], 111, [1] leaf, 18 cm. With the final leaf, containing the table of errata. The year of print is written on the title page using a chronogram of the words: "לאות בני מרי."
