West Africa, Cote D'Ivoire. Dan mask comprised from a sturdy dark wood. Inset eye socket rings comprised of sheets of thin steel, secured by copper pins. Representing dangerous immaterial forest spirits which are translated into the forms of human face masks. Whether or not they are won, each sculpture was known to be spiritually charged.
