Pre-Columbian Translucent Blue-Green Jade Avian Celt, Costa Rican 100-800CE
Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, 100 - 800CE Exceptionally colored translucent blue-green jade celt in avian form with pierced drill holes to either side of the neck for suspension. The Reverse with two old inventory marks (FM804) and (4373-9).
Costa Rica from 100 CE to just after 700 CE was one of the earliest centers of fine worked jade. Numerous examples have surfaced in the form of ax, celts, pendants, and more. The culture is marked by wings and avian form or zoomorphic depictions which give an example of stylized art of the period. Some of the best examples of the Jadeite are in translucent blue and apple green jade both of which were highly valued. 6 1/2" H
